On April 17, 1961, mercenary troops armed and trained by the United States landed in the area of Playa Girón, in the province of Matanzas (west), with the intention of creating conditions for the establishment of a provisional government and the subsequent overthrow of the Cuban revolution.
However, the people of Cuba faced the invasion and in less than 72 hours achieved victory over the enemy forces.
Since then Girón has been a symbol of resistance and victory for Cubans, a date on which the numerous fallen in the defense of the country are remembered.
