The sixth intergovernmental meeting will take place from April 25 to 28 and will be inaugurated by Santiago Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, the country that holds the presidency of that United Nations body in the 2022-2024 biennium.
During the forum, the executive secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, will present the document entitled “Latin America and the Caribbean halfway to 2030: progress and proposals for acceleration.”
In 2015 the UN General Assembly established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be met within eight years, including the end of poverty and hunger, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality and decent work.
The ECLAC text will examine the fulfillment of the goals related to clean water and sanitation, affordable and non-polluting energy, industry, innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities and alliances to achieve the SDGs.
The countries of the region will discuss strategies to advance the implementation of the UN agenda and the recovery after Covid-19.
In a recent interview with Prensa Latina, the executive secretary of ECLAC stated that the pandemic caused the worst crisis in Latin America in more than 100 years and objectives such as the end of poverty and zero hunger are in a risk zone given their low risk-rate of advance, stagnation or regression.
