“We are concerned, we are convening meetings to evaluate this situation. They are beginning again with their methods of pressure, harming the population, labor, the development of the country and the department”, Eufronio Herrera, leader of the social movement, assured to the Government´s channel Bolivia TV.
Herrera reiterated the call for a meeting of popular sectors in Santa Cruz to evaluate what is coming with the alleged rejection of laws that are not yet up for debate in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly, as they are in the phase of socialization with the sectors involved.
The president of the Pro Santa Cruz Civic Committee (CC), Fernando Larach, called for marches for tomorrow in rejection of bills 280 and 305, related to the work of the press and the fight against money laundering, respectively.
If these mobilizations, which in reality have destabilizing and anti-government political purposes, were to take place, said Herrera, the peasants will organize themselves so as to “defend democracy, the decisions made by the Government, the sources of work and the development of the department.”
Herrera criticized these power groups and reminded that the 36-day violent strike in October and November of last year with the slogan of “Population Census-2023 or bust” left many people with limited economic resources in debt, and this situation overwhelmed the patience of those who live on their daily wages.
The measure transcended the limits of peaceful protest and was characterized by blockades with the use of violence. There were racist attacks against indigenous communities and popular neighborhoods, occupation, looting and burning of the headquarters of workers’ and peasants’ organizations. It left a balance of four killed, hundreds injured, a complaint of gang rape of an underage and various expressions of violation of human rights.
