The space, located in the “Palacio del Segundo Cabow” is part of the program of the Month of Europe in Cuba (April 9 to May 9, 2023), that will be held for three days (April 13, 20 and 27 of this month).
On Thursday, the organizers booked the screening of “From Poland to Havana”; New Roots Under the Skin, a material that reviews the ties between the two nations, dating back to the World Wars and the entry of migrants from those lands to Cuba.
The documentary illustrates how Polish and Jews settled in different parts of the city, working mostly as artisans and laborers, as well as peddlers of ties, buttons, fabrics and Eskimo pie, among other products.
“Later, they opened specialized stores and wholesale stores,” and while memorable friendships emerged, such as the one between writers Virgilio Piñera and Witold Gombrowicz, which led to the translation into Spanish of Ferdydurke, the Polish author’s first novel.
For the next meetings, the presentations of Ireland and Cuba are scheduled. “Two islands in the same sea of Struggle”, “La huella francesa en La Habana” and “Italia en La Habana: como líneas de una mano”, which are part of the agenda for the month of May.
