Syrian Foreign Minister to visit Algeria and Tunisia

Argelia-Siria-Banderas
Damascus, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) Diplomatic sources cited by various media outlets revealed that the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Faisal Al-Mekdad, will begin an official visit to Algeria and Tunisia next week.

According to the sources, Al-Mekdad will start his tour in Algeria, where he will hold talks on bilateral cooperation in various fields and political developments in the Middle East and Northern Africa.

Algiers currently presides over the Arab Summit. Argelia did not break relations with Syria or close its embassy during the war; furthermore, it was the first Arab nation to send aid to Syria hours after the disaster caused by the earthquakes.

The same sources stated that the Syrian minister will then visit Tunisia, whose government recently raised to “Ambassador” the level of its diplomatic representation in Damascus.

It is expected that the reopening of the embassy of Syria in Tunisia will be officially announced during the visit.

Foreign Minister Al-Mekdad visited Egypt earlier this month, where he held talks with his counterpart Sameh Shoukry on the latest developments in the region and the world, as well as ways to strengthen relations.

The last two months have witnessed a degree of political opening from Arab countries towards Damascus, which was visited by several foreign ministers and leaders of parliaments and parties in of the area, in a step to reestablish ties and return Syria to its regional environment.
