President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed his condolences on Twitter and recalled that Conde was a fundamental collaborator of the expedition members of the Granma, “a yacht he owned and sailed into our history.”
On his Twitter account, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez sent his condolences to Conde’s family and friends and stressed that El Cuate will always be remembered, especially for his loyalty to and friendship with the historic leader, Fidel Castro.
Antonio Conde died on March 28 in the municipality of Tecate, in the state of Baja California, Mexico, and for undisclosed reasons, the information was released on Friday.
It was El Cuate who bought and repaired the Granma yacht that he delivered to Fidel so that, leading 82 expedition members, he could sail for Cuba, where he arrived on December 2, 1956, to start the necessary war against the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship in the Sierra Maestra Mountain Range.
