“We join Rwanda and the world today to recall the 29th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi group,” the AU wrote on its Twitter account.
The union’s department, which promotes good governance, peace, security, and stability on the continent and advocates African positions globally, held an open session on the eve of the anniversary to prevent hate ideology, genocide, and hate crimes in Africa.
Members highlighted their countries’ contribution to fighting against extermination and exchanged views on several media to prevent hate ideology and crimes.
The Council stressed the need for awareness-raising campaigns through education, creating a culture of peace, and promoting universal values of justice and tolerance, among others.
