Democrats call for removal of US Supreme Court Justice

Clarence-Thomas
Washington, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) Democratic congressmen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sheldon Whitehouse demanded the dismissal of United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas after being accused of accepting lavish gifts from a Republican donor, several publications highlighted today.

Ocasio-Cortez criticized the alleged actions as an “almost cartoonish” level of corruption. “This goes beyond party or partisanship,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter, “this level of corruption is shocking and Thomas must be charged.”

According to a ProPublica investigation, for years the magistrate made luxury trips and outings on yachts and private jets owned by Dallas businessman Harlan Crow.

The New York congresswoman also noted that the report of Thomas’ alleged misconduct reflects negatively on Chief Justice John Roberts.

“Baring some dramatic change, this is what the Roberts court will be known for: blatant corruption, erosion of democracy, and stripping of human rights,” Ocasio-Cortez continued.

Her statements were joined by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who assured that the news called for an independent investigation.

“This cries out for the kind of investigation the Supreme Court refuses to conduct,” Whitehouse said on Twitter.

In a separate statement, Crow did not deny allegations that Thomas had accepted such trips from him over the years, but said the Supreme Court justice never asked for gifts.

“The hospitality we have extended to the Thomases over the years is no different than the hospitality we have extended to many other dear friends,” said Crow, who has donated to Republican candidates for years, as reported by The Daily Mail and The Hill.

Clarence Thomas, the most conservative justice of the United States Supreme Court, was the only one of the nine members of the Supreme Court who supported a petition backed by former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) that sought to annul the results of the elections of 2020 in a state.

And in January 2022, Thomas was again the only judge to support a Trump request to ban the release of White House records related to the Capitol seizure.

The most veteran Supreme Court magistrate also advocates revoking other rights such as homosexual marriage.
