At least five thousand victims due to mine explosions in Syria

Damascus, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Red Crescent reported today that the number of people killed and maimed by mine explosions between 2018 and 2022 amounted to over five thousand.

In a statement issued on the occasion of the World Day for Mine Awareness, the non-governmental organization said that in February and March of this year alone, 47 people collecting truffles perished and 71 others were injured by exploding devices, a daily average of two to three deaths and injured.

According to reports from local authorities in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, four people were killed in the last 24 hours by bombs planted by terrorists.

The Syrian delegate to the United Nations agencies in Geneva, Husam al-Din Alaa, recently revealed that the army managed to dismantle more than 180 thousand mines and other explosive devices.

The diplomat denounced that foreign occupation forces and the presence of terrorists groups in some regions, block access and demining works.

However, despite all the obstacles, the Army has removed more than 50,000 explosive devices, 84,000 unexploded shells and 45,000 mines of various types, and cleared more than 55,000 hectares, Alaa revealed.

According to the latest data of the UN Anti-Mine Department in Syria, from 2015 to 2022 about 15 thousand people were killed or injured by mines, five per day.
