Heritage value of cassava tradition unites Caribbean countries

Paris, Mar 30 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan Culture Minister Ernesto Villegas praised Thursday the joint work done by five Caribbean countries at UNESCO to seek that tradition of cassava production and consumption be declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

We are pleased and proud to be part of this multinational dossier, along with the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Haiti, and Honduras. It will be presented at the Secretariat of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage on Friday, Villegas told Prensa Latina in Paris.

The request gathers knowledge and know-how accumulated over centuries, which have been handed down from generation to generation to be a part of the identity of communities with a tradition in the preparation and consumption of cassava based on manioc, a millenary crop.

According to the minister, the initiative shared by Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Haiti, and Honduras represents a step forward in cultural diversity and the recognition of the identity in Latin America and the Caribbean around several traditions.
