In an interview with Prensa Latina, Jose Antonio Toledo, one of the coordinators of the channel, commented that they will organize an online tournament to support Aleida Guevara’s idea of remembering her father, who was a lover and promoter of chess.
We talked to Aleida and proposed her to launch this online event from Europe for Cuba on Saturday, June 10, to support the activities that will take place on the Caribbean island to celebrate Che’s birthday, he said.
According to Toledo, the intention is that people from all over the world can participate, with the possibility that solidarity with Cuba in Europe and all over the planet will contribute their own initiatives around the day.
We have thought of incorporating personalities from different fields into the chess tournament, and we have received information that people in Italy are planning to organize competitions in dozens of cities, he added.
The coordinator of the audiovisual platform created in October 2020 said that on that day, they will broadcast videos and photos in order to pay tribute to Che Guevara.
He expressed satisfaction with supporting Aleida’s idea of remembering one of the emblematic figures of the Cuban Revolution and a universal symbol of the struggle for the independence and sovereignty of the peoples through chess.
There are still many steps to be taken for the day to be successful and to guarantee that as many people as possible join the event, Toledo said.
In the last three years, Europe for Cuba has organized various actions of solidarity with the Caribbean nation and against the blockade imposed by the United States, including caravans and rallies in dozens of cities around the world and a half marathon condemning the Washington-imposed economic, commercial and financial blockade.
