“We declare ourselves on a national strike,” they said in an official statement released on Sunday, after the deadline given to the Executive and Legislative Branch to meet their demands, had expired.
The protesters are claiming for the cancellation of Government Agreement 245-2022 and initiative 6165, which are intended to improve tax collection through electronic invoicing, according to the Tax Administration System.
In turn, the National Alliance of Indigenous Peoples considers that this will affect the economy of those who subsist on informal trade.
On March 22nd, representatives of the Ixil people, the Xinca Parliament, the 48 Cantons of Totonicapán and the Indigenous Mayor’s Office of Sololá, arrived at the Presidential House, where they delivered a memorandum with their requests and gave the government 48 hours to fulfill their requests.
That same day, in front of Congress, they had demanded the repeal of these laws or else they would call a national strike for March 27th.
“We call on the cantonal markets, the Terminal, the CENMA (Wholesale Center) to stand up for their rights, because these laws are going to affect us directly; they want to collect more taxes for their large salaries, for corruption,” several mayors stressed.
