During a debate on the challenges of democracy in the region, held at the exEsma Memory Space (Navy Mechanics School), the former president pointed out that this initiative will be analyzed within the framework of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) and he stressed the importance of having a court that does not respond to foreign interests.
Likewise, he highlighted recent reincorporation of Argentina to Unasur and affirmed that, with the support of this nation and Brazil, said integration platform will be strengthened before the end of this year.
In his intervention at the meeting organized as part of the 3rd World Forum on Human Rights, Samper also referred to the need to achieve unity to face the persecution of popular leaders such as Argentine vice president, Cristina Fernández.
Lawfare is the use of justice for political purposes, accusation without evidence and the denial of due process guarantees to progressive leaders. It is the result of the transfer of neoliberal practices to our countries, he affirmed.
Without justice there is no democracy. If we do not change the system it will not be possible to defend human rights, he asserted.
The former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, representatives of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo association and other organizations also participated in the debate.
