“Congratulations admirable #TeamAsere. You won three times: when you made the team and qualified first, and when you played to the last strike out against a great team and hatred of the worst kind. You made history. #Cuba beholds you proudly,” the president tweeted after the Cuba-US game, which the latter won.
The match, which started the tournament’s semifinals, took place at the LoanDepot Park in Miami, and the team had additional pressure from extremist Cuban exiles who politicized their presence and took aggressive actions against the team’s players, who play in the national league and foreign franchises, including the US Major League of Baseball (MLB).
The call for a popular welcome to the team on Monday was made on social media.
#TeamAsere (nickname of the Cuban team) was supported by its fans worldwide during last night’s match, and Diaz-Canel tweeted, “…all thoughts, feelings, and emotions of #Cuba will be placed on the field. #UntilVictoryForever.”
