The digital media Cubadebate added that such a measure occurred as part of the strategy to make the Cuban economy more dynamic.

At the same time, 1,080 local development projects were established to increase supplies of goods and services to the population, particularly food.

The publication commented that if they compare the figures during the same period in 2022, the growth is significant, since then there were only 1,286 companies of these types.

The increase occurs despite an unfavorable economic context, which affects the access to basic inputs for the development of the enterprises. These economic stakeholders emerge under the protection of new legislations, which bet on the participation of all forms of management in Cuba’s development.

A recent publication from the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP), prepared by Victoria Perez, PhD in Sciences, and a research team from the Cuban Institute of Anthropology, maps all private and state-owned MSMEs and CNAs.

In detail, it shows the number and types of stakeholders at the municipal, provincial, regional and national levels.

In the case of the approved MSMEs, the most represented sectors are food production, food commercialization (gastronomy), manufacture, construction materials, plastics, animal feed, rubber, footwear, timber, ceramics, paint, packaging, soap, and perfumes.

In addition, these structures are engaged in computer programming, the recovery of raw materials and recycling, and technical services, among others.

As stated in the report, it is worth noting that 62 percent of the new actors are based in western Cuba, while 40 percent reside in the capital, and in second place is the eastern Granma province.
