The lawmakers reviewed the fulfillment of the agreement adopted in the 10th Ordinary Session of the Parliament on the Law on Food Sovereignty, and Food and Nutritional Security.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, was chaired by Parliament President Esteban Lazo, and was attended by members of other parliamentary commissions, as well as Minister of Agriculture Ydael Perez Brito, and the deputy ministers of the Food Industry, Public Health, Economy and Planning, and Finance and Prices, among others.
Participants in the meeting addressed the concerns, criteria, approaches and states of opinion of the population on this matter and especially high food prices.
Esteban Lazo pointed out that this commission of the National Assembly monitors the fundamental problems of the citizens, controls compliance with the approved laws and the progress of programs of high social relevance, with a view to contributing with concrete proposals for solutions.
He insisted on the strategic aspect of generalizing the best experiences at the municipal, provincial and national levels to make them the rule in the nation in order to increase production.
Among the actions of the Agri-Food Commission, the verification of compliance with the measures in provinces and municipalities to increase food production and the evaluation of the marketing system of agricultural products were highlighted.
In addition, the status of accounts to collect and to pay with agricultural producers will be systematically verified, and meetings will be held with outstanding peasants and cooperative members to socialize their results and projections, among other actions.
Minister Ydael Perez Brito stated that one of the fundamental challenges is the most efficient exploitation of productive forces, land and natural resources; better exploitation of the usufruct, elimination of obstacles in production, and better attention to the countryside and rural communities, among other aspects.
He also mentioned better applying science and innovation, promoting good practices, fostering new agricultural areas, monitoring and improving contracts, and encouraging the use of bioproducts and biofertilizers.
Perez assured that it is possible to produce much more in Cuba to the extent that these problems are solved.
Esteban Lazo was interested in the strategies to reduce the prices of products, eliminate intermediaries, following up on contracts and commercialization effectively, and exerting control by Ministry of Agriculture.
