Havana, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Wednesday congratulated journalists who received the Jose Marti National Award on the occasion of Cuban Press Day.

On his Twitter account, the president praised the work of Cuban press workers by pointing out that “Every day is a page of Patria (Homeland),” in reference to the newspaper founded by Jose Marti on March 14, 1892, to disseminate the struggles of Cubans for their emancipation and the preparations for the independence struggle.

Diaz-Canel also tweeted, “Our admiration and respect for the journalists acknowledged with the Jose Marti National Journalism Award.”

On Tuesday, the head of State presided over the ceremony at which he personally granted the 2023 Jose Marti Awards to five professionals for their Life Work, the highest individual recognition granted by the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) to its members, for their exceptional work.

Six other journalists were granted the 2022 Juan Gualberto Gomez Annual Award, instituted in 1989 to commend the work of outstanding professionals in the radio, television, films and graphic fields; and mentions of that award were given to a similar number of journalists, mostly young people.

During the ceremony, President Diaz-Canel awarded the Friendship Medal to the director of the Pan-Arab satellite information network Al Mayadeen, Ghassan Ben Jeddou.

This acknowledgement is granted by the Council of State at the proposal of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) to foreigners with a history of solidarity with Cuba and unconditional commitment to the defense of the Revolution.
