Health workers kick off strike in Germany

Berlin, Mar 14 (Prensa Latina) Strikes across Germany in protest against high cost of living increased on Tuesday after stoppage of some 13,000 employees of medical institutions in several federal states, according to union sources.

Constant failure of negotiations for a salary rise for health workers led the strike to continue nationwide, joined to Monday´s stoppage at airports in several cities.

Germany´s second-largest trade union Ver.di informed on that the stoppage began in several clinics in the wee hours.

In particular, the participants of the strike include workers from hospitals, psychiatric clinics, ambulances and institutions with permanent care for patients, the local broadcaster reported.

Ver.di, on the other hand, called for a 10.5% salary rise for averagely two and a half million health workers nationwide.

Meanwhile, in some cases employers and the government are only providing a 5% salary rise in two stages, covering no cost of living at all.
