Gun violence upsurge forces closure of five schools in St Lucia

Castries, Mar 10 (Prensa Latina) The St. Lucia government on Friday announced the closure of five schools in the southern town of Vieux Fort after three people were shot and killed and a nine-year-old boy injured as a result of gun violence.

The Ministry of Education, in a statement, cited ‘the current unstable environment’ in Vieux Fort in announcing the closure of five schools in the area.

The ministry advised parents and guardians to make all necessary arrangements to keep themselves and their children safe.

Just the day before, the island’s Education Ministry hired the services of an expert to reinforce security in schools based on policies and new strategies.

The dynamics of society in general with regard to crime has infiltrated the country’s educational centers, the Education Minister Shawn Edward told the press.

He raised the possibility of having law enforcement officers in some schools from time to time to deter and guide students and staff on the Law.
