A 12-strong gang managed to break this morning into the terminal to steal 26 billion pesos (US$32.5 million) of remittances arriving from Miami, but was repelled by DGAC agents.
In the confrontation, a Civil Aeronautics official and one of the criminals were killed. The criminals burned two of the four vehicles used to commit the robbery and escaped.
During a ceremony at La Moneda Palace, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Chilean President Gabriel Boric conveyed his sorrow for the death of the DGAC member and promised to pursue those who put the lives of his compatriots in danger.
A large number of police officers are being deployed in the terminal and surrounding areas to find the perpetrators of the robbery.
