Hostilities should cease as of Tuesday according to the announcement made on Friday by Angolan President João Lourenço, who chairs the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region and is the African Union (AU) mediator in the current crisis between the DRC and neighboring Rwanda.
A delegation of the M23 rebel group stayed in Luanda from Tuesday, February 28, to Friday, March 3, on an invitation by Lourenço, who then sent an official delegation to Kinshasa to report on the results to his DR Congo counterpart, Félix Tshisekedi.
Radio Okapi station stressed this Tuesday that the recent contacts in Luanda were in response to a decision by the African Union, adopted in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, on February 17 after previous attempts to cease hostilities, cantonment and subsequent demobilization of the M23 forces failed.
Insurgents and their sponsors have reportedly multiplied attacks on the Armed Forces positions in Masisi and Rutshuru territories on Sunday, thereby occupying new localities.
