Vietnam’s parliament elects Vo Van Thuong as a new president (+Photo)

Hanoi, Mar 2 (Prensa Latina) Vietnam's National Assembly (Parliament) on Thursday elected Vo Van Thuong as the new president of the country during a special session for a term that will extend until 2026.

Van Thuong, 52, won the support of 98.38 percent of lawmakers and swore in a solemn ceremony to be loyal to the Fatherland, the People, and the Constitution and work hard to fulfill the duties assigned by the Communist Party of Vietnam, the State, and the people, VNA reported.

Van Thuong, who was born on December 13, 1970, in southern Vinh Long province, joined the ranks of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) in 1993.

His election as the new president was preceded by a meeting of the Central Committee of the Party of the 13th mandate, where the candidates who would hold that position were presented.

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan has been appointed interim president after Xuan Phuc resigned.

The CPV Central Committee had previously accepted the resignation presented by Xuan Phuc, who was also released from his responsibilities in that body, the Political Bureau, and as head of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 period.
