The exact date and participation criteria are not yet set, but the event will coincide with the Republican National Committee (RNC) summer meeting, and will continue the tradition of holding the first debate in the same city that will host the convention in 2024, broadcast the NBC News network.
The report added that the president of the RNC, Ronna McDaniel, promised in an email to party members “a fair and neutral debate”, in a process that already includes former President Donald Trump (2017-2021).
The former president, deprived of a second term after losing to Joe Biden in 2020, is running again but has already attracted some challengers, including his former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.
Other Republicans are expected to enter the race, notably Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has led the former president in some primary polls.
After the first debate, Republicans will likely hold monthly meetings through the end of this year, and could increase the number of meetings to two or more per month thereafter, a person familiar with RNC discussions on the matter told NBC News.
