Death toll rises to 44 due to rains in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Brasilia, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) The death toll from heavy rains that devastated the northern coast of Brazil's Sao Paulo state over the weekend on Tuesday rose to 44 people, of which 43 were injured, and 49 remain missing.

G1 news portal assures that rescue teams resumed the search for survivors this Tuesday after the storm; the results of the state government pointed out that of 44 dead, 43 were reported in the city of Sao Sebastião and one in Ubatuba.

So far, 1,730 people have been evicted from homes, and 766 have been displaced. The Government also reported that seven lifeless bodies were handed over to their families.

Diego Souza, a meteorologist at the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters, told G1 that downpours are maintained on the coast but with less intensity for the next two days.
