Irregular migrant accident shakes Panama

Panama City, Feb 18 (Prensa Latina) A bus carrying 66 irregular migrants on board fell off a cliff, leaving 41 dead and dozens injured.

According to the Government, 42 of the passengers were men and 24 women, who were traveling from the province of Darién to the Los Planes Immigration Residence Station.

According to the official report, 22 of the migrants were Ecuadorian, 16 Haitian, 11 Venezuelan, six Brazilian, five Colombian, two Cameroonian, two Cuban, one Eritrean and one Nigerian. Twenty minors were traveling in total: 12 boys and eight girls, the report added.

The Presidency of the Republic also stated that specialized personnel from the Public Ministry are conducting out medical studies to identify the recovered corpses and all the resources available in the hospitals of the region are allocated to the care of the survivors.

It also said that the rigorous investigation to identify all the deceased has not yet concluded due to the condition of the bodies.

The director of the National Migration Service, Samira Gozaine, explained that “the bus driver passed the entrance to the shelter and turned around to return,” at that point it collided with another vehicle and fell down a slope.

The governments of Cuba, Colombia and Ecuador expressed their solidarity with Panama for the tragedy.
