Convicted participant in assault on the US Capitol

Washington, Feb 14 (Prensa Latina) The participant in the assault on the US Capitol in 2021 Daniel Rodríguez, accused of using an electroshock weapon to assault Metropolitan Police officer Michael Fanone, pleaded guilty today.

The 40-year-old from Fontana, California, was charged with eight federal counts, admitting to four: conspiracy, obstructing official proceedings, document tampering and inflicting bodily injury on an officer with a Taser .

According to NBC News, three of those charges carry a maximum of two decades in prison, although Rodriguez is more likely to face between seven and 10 years.

Prosecutors indicated that they could argue that an increased sentence for terrorism should be applied in that case.

The plea agreement does not require Rodríguez to cooperate with the prosecution, the outlet said, adding that District Judge Amy Berman Jackson will hand down a sentence on May 16.

On January 6, 2021, hundreds of supporters of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) attacked the federal Capitol to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 elections, in riots that caused five deaths and more than 140 injured policemen.

Rodríguez admitted to taking part in the assault after another rioter dragged Officer Fanone into the crowd outside the scene, where police tried to repel the mob.

According to CBS News, at one point the officer lost consciousness and suffered a heart attack, and was heard on camera yelling that he had children, in a desperate plea for his life, while other rioters beat him.

Rodríguez bragged about the assault to his friends.

As a result of the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice into the attack in these two years there were more than 900 arrests, almost 500 guilty pleas and dozens of significant prison sentences.
