According to an IATA report, the result is due that most governments lifted restrictions imposed due to Covid-19 pandemic, and people took advantage of the opportunity to travel.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh noted that a trend would continue in 2023 despite overreactions in some countries to China’s reopening.
In figures, total traffic in 2022 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers) rose 64.4 percent compared to 2021 and stood at 68.5 percent of 2019 levels late last year.
Walsh stressed that despite the increase in international passenger demand in 2022, marking 152.7 percent compared to 2021, it only reached 62.2 percent of pre-pandemic levels.
