President Lopez Obrador thanks Cuba for sending doctors to Mexico

Mexico, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) President Andres Manuel Lopez on Friday thanked Cuba for sending doctors to support Mexico's national healthcare program, and announced the visit to Campeche of his counterpart, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez, on Saturday.

In response to a question at a press conference at the Zapopan military base, in the state of Jalisco, the Mexican head of State noted that they will meet to discuss other issues beyond health care, and condemned again the United States blockade against Cuba.

Lopez Obrador informed that he will receive Diaz-Canel, who will only visit Campeche, and according to his agenda, he will leave on on Sunday, when he will continue his trip to Belize.

We are going to have this meeting on Saturday. In the morning we will receive him in Campeche, we will visit an archaeological zone, we will supervise what is being done regarding the construction of the Mayan Train and there are many Cuban doctors there, as well as in other parts of the country, more than 500 specialists and general practitioners.

He repeated that he wishes to thank the people and Government of Cuba for their support in order to have a quality, universal healthcare system in Mexico, where free medicines are delivered to the entire population, not only the basic picture, and where medical care is also free, it is a commitment, he stressed.

The president explained that now Mexico is training its specialists, but even so they are not enough, that is why other countries are also asked, because the purpose is to attend to hospitals seven days a week and 24 hours a day, not only Monday to Friday.

He affirmed that the commitment is that by the middle of this year we will already have the complete system of medical care for the population, it is a challenge, and he praised the Cuban healthcare system, which he considered among the best in the world because for years they have trained doctors. The president announced that there are possibilities for more doctors to arrive in Mexico.

In response to another question, Lopez Obrador confirmed that ballast is being imported from Cuba to secure the lines and sleepers of the Mayan Train. It is a very hard stone specifically for this job that is not found in the Yucatan peninsula, but a large quantity is required for a 1,5554-kilometer railway line, and Cuba is very close.

Regarding the United States blockade, he noted that Mexico’s stance on this unfair measure is based on the principles of its foreign policy expressed at the United Nations about not accepting the blockade, which he considered an arrogant act and violation of human rights.

Lopez Obrador charged that a people cannot be isolated or blockaded, especially when it comes to political issues only. What is the fault of citizens, the people, that political or ideological differences exist? Why does the people have to suffer? he wondered.

It is a flagrant violation of human rights, he said, and demanded that the blockade, which he described as a medieval measure contrary to the friendly relationship that should be sought among all the peoples of the Americas, be lifted.
