On his Twitter profile, the Cuban head of State recalled that Garcia Frias was the first peasant incorporated into and promoted to that position in the Rebel Army that, led by Fidel Castro, fought the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1959).
Diaz-Canel highlighted his permanence at the service of the country, currently in defense of Cuban fields as director of the National Flora and Fauna Company.
Garcia Frias holds the honorary title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba, and is one of the historic leaders of the Cuban Revolution.
In the guerrilla fight in the Sierra Maestra mountains, he got the rank of commander and was the second in command at the Third Eastern Front.
After the revolutionary triumph on January 1, 1959, he was head of the Western Army, as well as vice president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers, and minister of Transportation.
Garcia Frias was also a member of the Council of State until October 10, 2019, and of the Council of Ministers since April 19, 2018.
