WHO and PHO experts advise Colombian government on health reform

Bogotá, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) A delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization provide support and technical advice to the Government of Colombia regarding reforms of the sector.

The nine members of these entities are already discussing with Colombian health authorities the elements of the reform proposal that will be presented in the coming days in Congress.

The high-level mission arrived in the country as part of the agreement reached by President Gustavo Petro with the director of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a meeting that took place in the context of the World Economic Forum held in Davos (Switzerland) in January.

The Government of Gustavo Petro has among its objectives the implementation of a health reform which will guarantee the right to health service to the entire population.

According to Carolina Corcho, Minister of Health, the system should be understood as a comprehensive model that prevents disease and responds to it through an effective service, which is influenced by other elements that affect the quality of life of Colombians.

Corcho considers that the reform is not an exclusive initiative of the national government, but that it is a proposal and claims of social movements and civil society that have analyzed the current health system in the country and detected failures.
