The general director for High Performance at the Cuban Sports Institute (INDER), Jose Antonio Miranda, confirmed to Prensa Latina that Cuba is expected to participate in the event with some 500 athletes.
The guarantees are maintained, we know that the Government of El Salvador has been working on the security of the event and our colleagues who are there have told us that so far everything is going well, he said.
In any case, he added that visits will be made before the Games to evaluate this issue, which is fundamental and has already caused Cuba to miss the San Salvador 2002 edition.
The qualifying process is going well, and today we have 332 athletes who have qualified and there are about 14 sports to be defined, the majority by ranking, such as athletics, badminton and triathlon, he explained.
In this regard, the Cuban sports official pointed out that in May they should be closing the qualifications.
For the Santiago 2023 Pan-American Games we already have 98 places and those for 19 sports remain to be distributed, there are even 11 that will qualify for the Central American Games, he concluded.
According to Cuban sports authorities, the goal in the regional competition is to occupy second place, behind Mexico.
