Egypt calls for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region

Cairo, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) The Egyptian government reiterated the needs to work so as to establish a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, reported the Al-Ahram diary.

This was stated by the permanent representative of Cairo to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ahmed Ihab Gamal El-Din, during a Conference on Disarmament, which discussed the setting up of nuclear-weapon-free zones and their role in promoting international peace and security.

The official detailed the efforts to achieve the goal, which seems distant due to the refusal of Israel, the only nuclear power in the region, to sign any document in this regard.

In December 2012, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution on the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, which was endorsed by the Arab states.

Tel Aviv rejected the initiative, noting that it does not reflect their national policy on the issue.
