The President of the Cuban Federation of University Students (FEU), Emilio Morejón, told Juventud Rebelde newspaper that the parade will take place from the steps of the University of Havana to the Forge of Martí under the slogan “His torch, my strength.”
According to Morejón, the activity will also be a tribute to the historic leader Fidel Castro, the “pioneer generation” of the Revolution, and a “call to have Marti as a guide for the rebellious actions of the young ones.”
The student leader pointed out that the tribute to the National Hero will be extended to social media with a world wide message action through Twitter from 18:00 hours to 23:00 hours, local time, under the tags #MartíVive, #SuAntorchaMiFuerza, and #MartianosHoy.
The delegates attending the 5th International Conference for the World’s Balance, ongoing in Havana, until January 28, will participate in the march along with the Cuban young people.
The first March of the Torches was held in Cuba, the midnight of January 27th, 1953, awaiting the 100th anniversary of the birth of José Martí.
According to historical researches, the march also became an act of protest against the crimes of dictator Fulgencio Batista (in power after the 1952 coup d’état) and the persecution of those young people who sought to change the political course of the island. jrr/iff/jcm/mks

Jóvenes de Cuba reeditarán tradicional Marcha de las Antorchas
La Habana, 27 ene (Prensa Latina) Jóvenes de Cuba reeditarán hoy en todas las provincias del país la tradicional Marcha de las Antorchas en homenaje al Héroe Nacional, José Martí, en el aniversario 170 de su natalicio.
El presidente de la Federación Estudiantil Universitaria (FEU), Emilio Morejón, explicó, en declaraciones al diario Juventud Rebelde, que el desfile se realizará desde la Universidad de La Habana hasta la Fragua Martiana, bajo el lema “Su antorcha, mi fuerza”.
Según Morejón, la actividad también será un tributo al líder histórico Fidel Castro, a la “generación pionera” de la Revolución y un “llamado a tener a Martí como guía de la acción rebelde de los jóvenes”.
El dirigente estudiantil señaló que el homenaje al Héroe Nacional se extenderá hasta las redes sociales con un tuitazo nacional desde las 18:00 hasta las 23:00, hora local, con las etiquetas #MartíVive, #SuAntorchaMiFuerza y #MartianosHoy.
Participarán en la marcha junto a la juventud cubana, delgados de la V Conferencia Internacional Por el Equilibrio del Mundo que sesiona en la capital hasta el 28 de enero
La primera Marcha de las Antorchas se organizó para la medianoche del 27 de enero de 1953, con el objetivo de esperar el advenimiento del centenario del natalicio de José Martí.
De acuerdo con investigaciones históricas, la caminata devino entonces también en acto de protesta contra los crímenes del dictador Fulgencio Batista (en el poder tras el golpe de Estado de 1952) y la persecución a los jóvenes que buscaban cambiar el rumbo político de la isla.
