Turkiye suspends meeting with Sweden and Finland

Turkiye-Mevlut-Cavusoglu-300x198
Ankara, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced today that the meeting scheduled between his country, Sweden and Finland on their accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been indefinitely postponed.

According to the Anatolia news agency, the Turkiye Foreign Minister indicated that the meeting, planned for February, does not make sense due to the current political situation.

The foreign minister said that Sweden has not fulfilled its commitments under the memorandum signed during the last NATO summit in Madrid.

Turkiye demands that the two Scandinavian countries take greater action against the activists of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), whom Ankara describes as terrorists.

Cavusoglu made his statements during a press conference with his Serbian peer, Ivica Dacic, adding that under these conditions, the meeting would not be healthy because the current environment would overshadow it.

The political atmosphere has become more tense in recent days due to demonstrations by PKK activists in Stockholm and the burning of the Koran by a Danish extremist, in front of the Turkish embassy in that capital, events for which Ankara blamed the Swedish government.
