In the last few days, gang members broke into Corail, Jérusalem and Onaville, looted and set fire to houses and forced hundreds of people to leave their homes.
Witnesses stated that the attacks began last week and the gunmen are trying to identify police houses in order to set them on fire.
The situation worsened since Sunday when the police who were stopping the gangs’ actions withdrew, some residents deplored. In addition, public transportation, schools, and major services are dysfunctional.
In April and May 2022, hostilities in the region left some 200 dead when the 400 Mawozo and Chen Mechan gangs clashed for controlling the territories in the Cul de Sac plain.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Ariel Henry encouraged member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to participate in a specialized multinational force requested by Haiti to help the police fight organized crime, illegal trafficking of weapons and ammunition, and eradicate the gangs that have taken the country as a hostage.
