Lula to overcome health crisis in Brazil’s largest indigenous reserve

Brasilia, Jan 21 (Prensa Latina) President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrived today in Boa Vista, municipality and capital of the northern state of Roraima, to address the health crisis of Yanomami populations, the largest indigenous land in Brazil.

The governor intends to accompany the work of the Ministries of Indigenous Peoples and Health in the territory.

The day before, the Health Ministry declared a public health emergency to deal with malnutrition in native communities.

Since Monday, ministry technicians have rescued at least eight Yanomami children in serious condition.

Due to this situation, Lula decreed the creation of a National Coordination Committee, to discuss and adopt measures in coordination with other powers to provide assistance to this population.

The action plan must be presented within 45 days and the board will work for 90 days, period which can be extended.

The president’s visit to Roraima is also a long-standing desire of the indigenous leaders who participated in the technical groups of the transition cabinet.
