Cuba, 64 years of communication challenges

Havana, Jan 21 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Revolution maintains its communication challenges of showing its reality 64 years after the Truth Operation, first attempt to break the monopolistic discourse of the mainstream medias.

The event was the first battle of the Caribbean island against disinformation, after the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, called a massive press conference to thwart a campaign on the trials and execution of notorious torturers and murderers of the Batista dictatorship.

The medias play began with pronouncements of U.S. congressmen that were immediately backed by press agencies such as UPI and AP, who imposed a narrative in the world about the newborn Revolution.

In less than 48 hours more than 380 journalists from the United States and Latin America were invited to Havana where they were able to see first hand evidence of the crimes committed by those on trial and the massive support of the people for the government’s measures.

When answering questions from the journalists, Fidel denounced the information monopoly of the news agencies and raised the needs for Latin America to have its own voice, an idea that would be materialized months later with the foundation, in June 1959, of the Latin American News Agency Prensa Latina.

This media scenario is currently maintained by means of hybrid or fourth generation warfare operations, amplified by social network platforms.

Cuban authorities, experts and communication professionals periodically condemn the launching of disinformation campaigns and operations from those spaces through the use of robots and psychological techniques to provoke a social outburst or denigrate programs of the Revolution and its rulers.

Facing these challenges, the Cuban Revolution has maintained its attachment to the principle that accompanied its media project from its beginnings: commitment to the truth.
