Laying submarine telecommunications cable in Cuba speeds up

Havana, Jan 20 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Ministry of Communications stated that it is working rapidly to put a new fiber-optic cable into operation in the Caribbean island as soon as possible, local press reported on Friday.

It will help cover Cuba’s demand for Internet and broadband connection.

Alejandro Ruiz, director of the Telecommunications department at the Ministry of Communications, explained that work is in a linking process and future tests. Once in operation, it will increase and diversify Cuba’s international internet connection.

After the laying of undersea fiber-optic cables has concluded, the terrestrial laying and the integration of equipment and systems of the interconnected points will be finished, Ruiz said, quoted by Granma newspaper.

Cuba S.A. Telecommunication Enterprise (ETECSA) is conducting the technical works jointly with French company Orange S.A.

In December, the Caribbean state entity reported on its website that Cuba and French company Orange S.A. agreed to lay a submarine cable to help cover the Caribbean nation’s demand for Internet and broadband connection
