According to Kaili’s attorneys, the former vice-president of the European Parliament had to endure low temperatures without adequate protection, was subjected to constant lighting and suffers from lack of hygiene.
Kaili was accused of belonging to a criminal organization as well as corruption and money laundering, in a bribery scenario around the European Parliament.
On December 23, the Brussels court refused to release Kaili from custody after a closed-door hearing.
Kaili´s defense insisted on defendant’s innocence and claimed she was mistreated in relation to the other defendants in the investigation.
The prosecution, on the other hand, opposes her to be released on the grounds she is a flight risk, a risk of destroying evidence and a risk of collusion with others involved.
Eva Kaili was arrested last December 9, 2022, at a police raid where over €1.5 million were found.
