The number of bankers earning more than €1 million a year in the EU increased by 41.5% in 2021, according to a report by EBA. If in 2020 there were 1,383 such people, then in 2021 – 1,957. This is a record figure for the entire time of keeping statistics, that is, since 2010, if you do not take into account data from the UK.

Social media and economists lashed out at these increased high earners in Europe, at a time of difficulties in a large number of countries, especially the poorest.

The increase is also explained by some offshoring from London following the Brexit. 2021 was characterized by a strong financial recovery after a 2020 penalized by the Covid-19 pandemic and confinements, the statement recalls.
