In his speech at the two-day virtual summit ‘Voice of the Global South’, referring to developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, the incumbent said that rich countries have consumed their share of climate resources and it is time for them to accept responsibility for past actions.
Stating that New Delhi understands the vulnerability of developing nations and small island states, Yadav said urgent global climate action is the need of the hour and must be guided by principles of climate justice, including equity and common responsibilities but differentiated and their respective capabilities.
He further pointed out that the concept of equity means that each country’s share of carbon dioxide emissions is equal to its share of the world’s population.
The principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capacities recognizes that each nation is responsible for addressing climate change, but developed countries must bear the main responsibility, since they are the cause of most of the historical and current greenhouse gas emissions greenhouse to the atmosphere, he said.
India has always promoted a global initiative that upholds the interests and concerns of developing countries, said the environment minister.
