The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, expressed his solidarity with Lula and the people of Brazil, in the face of the attempted coup against his government and questioned the role of the OAS.
“Fascism decides to stage a coup. The right wing has not been able to keep the pact of non-violence”, Petro stressed in view of the assaults by Bolsonaro’s followers to the headquarters of the three powers in Brazil.
He pointed out that it is urgent time for a meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) if it wants to remain alive as an institution and apply the democratic charter.
A violent crowd assaulted the National Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Power, causing damages in the three governmental headquarters.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel condemned the violent actions in Brasilia, which he compared to those carried out by radical followers of former President Donald Trump in Washington in January 2021.
“We strongly condemn the violent and anti-democratic acts occurring in Brazil, with the aim of generating chaos and disrespecting the popular will expressed with the election of President Lula, Diaz-Canel wrote on Twitter.
Mexico rejected the coup actions carried out by bolsonaristas against the Lula government and reiterated its support for the legitimately elected dignitary.
In an urgent statement on social media, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, ratified Mexico’s support to the democratically elected government of Lula in the face of the disturbances caused in that country by Bolsonaro’s supporters.
The governments of Panama, Honduras and Peru repudiated the coup action against the people of Brazil and Lula by followers of the right-wing Bolsonaro who settled in Miami, United States, after finishing his mandate on December 31.
Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez repeated his call to Latin American unity and urged to preserve democracy in Brazil.
The presidential spokeswoman, Gabriela Cerruti, said Fernandez talked to Brazilian former foreign minister Celso Amorin about the crisis in Brasilia.
Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernandez repudiated the violence and coup actions against Lula’s government by opposition sectors.
“Hate speeches in the media and social networks, the stigmatization of those who do not think the same way to the point of even wanting to suppress their lives, and violence, are contemporary signs of the new right wing. The necessary repudiation or condemnation is not enough,” she stressed.
The Government of Nicaragua emphatically condemned the violent actions against the rule of law in Brazil, and rejected “coup terrorism against movements, parties, governments and progressive leaders who represent the interests of the peoples”.
The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) conveyed its support and solidarity with President Lula in the face of the acts of vandalism against the powers of the State.
The Attorney General’s Office of Brazil has asked the Supreme Court for the arrest of former Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District (FD) Anderson Torres for the violent events in Brasilia.
In view of the aggressive riots, the DF governor, Ibaneis Rocha, dismissed Torres.
The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Rosa Weber, affirmed that the court will act to punish the extremist demonstrators who invaded today the headquarters of three branches of government in Brazil.
