Tourist flow to Holguin, Cuba, grows

Holguin, Cuba, Jan 6 (Prensa Latina) The most important tourist destination in eastern Cuba, Holguin, reports today a high hotel occupancy rate, thanks to the gradual rise of international air operations in recent days.

Carlos Alvarez, commercial manager of the Ministry of Tourism in Holguin told Prensa Latina that, so far, the winter season is having an excellent performance in the territory, since, for example, last December 29, more than 7,000 tourists stayed overnight in local hotels.

Likewise, he assured that these level of visitors will continue since 6,780 rooms of the more than 7,300 available are occupied.

Likewise, he stressed that this number of guests will be stable, especially preferring the 5-star Gran Muthu Almirante Beach hotels, located in Guardalavaca; Playa Pesquero and Playa Costa Verde, which exceed 80 percent of accumulated occupancy in these first days of January.

“Currently, all the lodging facilities are open, except for the former Yuraguanal or Memories, where some works are being done by the Melia hotel chain to become the Sol Turquesa Beach,” he added.

Meanwhile, the recently opened Tesoro del Atlántico, located on the El Ramón peninsula, in the municipality of Antilla, is managed by Blue Diamond Resorts and is marketed under the name Grand Memories Holguin.

Yoel Hechavarría, general coordinator of Holguín’s Frank Pais International Airport, said that Sunwing, Transat, Air Canada, WestJet, Condor, Neos and American Airline, among others, continue to arrive at the airport.

Canada continues to be the main country of origin and as of last December, several of its airlines added new connections to this destination from Quebec, Hamilton and Ottawa.

Hechavarría commented to this press agency that an average of 53 weekly flights arrive at the “Frank País” air facility on this date, a figure that may increase, thus reaching its highest peak in February and approaching the traditional operations before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Holguin, about 700 kilometers from Havana, is one of the most comprehensive destinations in Cuba, since it offers experiences in the modalities of sun and beach tourism, nature, history, culture and health, among others that are very popular among foreign tourists and tourists from all over the country.
