Israelis fear for democracy after triumph of far right

israel
Tel Aviv, Dec 28 (Prensa Latina) 60 percent of Israelis consider that democracy in the country is in danger with the coming to power of the new government, which includes numerous far-right figures among its members, a survey revealed.

A survey by the firm “Geocartografia” indicated that 76 percent of Arab-Israelis believe that democracy is in danger, a figure that dropped to 56 percent among Jews.

A few days ago, a study by the Kantor Institute highlighted that 42 percent of Israelis are pessimistic about the future of the country. The study specified that only 29 percent of those interviewed were optimistic and the rest avoided answering.

The Israeli Defense Minister, Benny Gantz, warned on Wednesday about an escalation of violence in the Palestinian territories before the imminent takeover of the ultra-right wing. During an interview with Channel 12, the official, who will leave office in the coming days, called on the Army and the Israeli law enforcement to prepare for greater confrontations.

The return to power of Benjamin Netanyahu, who ruled Israel for 15 years previously, and his far-right associates, is causing concern in the Middle East and in broad sectors of Israel society.

Netanyahu is considered a hawk, and his closest allies in the coalition are a number of openly racist and anti-Arab politicians such as Itamar Ben Gvir and Belzalel Smotrich.

Former Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni stated days ago that the next government will destroy democracy in the country.
