With the measure, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court, complies with the request of the transition team of the Lula government, which aims to increase protection at the inauguration ceremony of the founder of the Workers’ Party, scheduled for Sunday in Brasilia.
The restriction is valid from 6:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday until the same time on January 2.
In accordance with the minister’s decision, whoever does not respect the determination in that period must be fined in flagrante for illegal possession of a war device.
The suspension came four days after businessman George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, 54, a supporter of defeated President Jair Bolsonaro, was arrested and accused of being a terrorist.
The criminal confessed that he built a war device introduced on December 24 in a fuel tanker truck in an area of the Brasilia international airport. Police were able to disable the contraption before it went off.
During the interrogation, De Oliveira Sousa acknowledged that the attack was set up with other Bolsonaristas (followers of the ultra-conservative politician) who remain camped in front of the Army Headquarters in Brasilia to call for a coup that prevents Lula’s assumption of power.
“I decided to draw up a plan with the demonstrators at the Army Headquarters to provoke the intervention of the Armed Forces and the declaration of a state of siege to prevent the establishment of communism in Brazil,” he revealed.
At his residence, the Police found two shotguns, two revolvers, three pistols, a rifle, ammunition, camouflage uniforms, and other explosive emulsions.
“What motivated me to acquire the weapons were the words of President Bolsonaro who always stresses the importance of civilian weapons,” the criminal admitted.
Given the fact, the future Minister of Justice, Flavio Dino, pointed out that the protection of the elected ruler will be reinforced.
“All the procedures (of caring for Lula) will be re-evaluated, seeking to strengthen security. And the fight against terrorists and rioters will be intensified. Democracy has won and will win,” Dino wrote on social networks.
The PT leader defeated Bolsonaro in the second round of voting on October 30, who coveted re-election and, after a long silence, declined to hand over the presidential sash to his successor next Sunday at the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Power.
