According to DANE´s report, hunger and malnutrition death toll increased last year, compared to 2020, and most of these occurred in departments with higher poverty rates.
DANE detailed that Colombia´s child malnutrition mortality rate was 7.8% per 100,000 children aged under five in 2021, while in 2020 there were 265 deaths (6.7%).
The two departments reporting highest malnutrition child death toll were Chocó (89%), La Guajira (55.3%), and Vichada (50.2%). The Colombian government is currently promoting a series of reforms, such as the Agrarian Reform, for a better food security in the country.
