Foreign Minister Wang Yi made these statements during a recent telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

The foreign minister criticized the USA for clinging to ‘zero-sum thinking’ regardless of the destructive effect on both sides, and called on Washington to pay attention to Beijing’s legitimate interests.

“The United States cannot engage in a dialogue and containment at the same time, it cannot talk about cooperating in front of China and then stab it in the back. This is not a reasonable competition, but unreasonable oppression. It is not managing disputes, but intensifying conflicts,” he said.

The foreign minister considered that the meeting in Indonesia between Presidents Xi Jinping and Joe Biden sent out positive signals and now it is up to both powers to translate their consensus into concrete actions and practical policies.

He advocated expanding bilateral consultations at all levels and in different fields in order to resolve the problems the two nations face.

Blinken, for his part, indicated that the United States is willing to discuss the basic principles of Beijing-Washington relations, manage them responsibly and foster cooperation in areas of common interest, pledging to abide by the one-China principle and to not to support the independence of Taiwan, considered the thorniest issue of the ties.
