Havana, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) An area besieged in past centuries and with great stories of privateers and pirates, the Caribbean is nowadays a perfect place to enjoy nature and beaches with more than 340 days of sunshine per year.

Its more than 700 islands, islets, coral reefs and caves have a mixture of Spanish, French and English cultures that were introduced with colonization, as well as African culture, which is why Spanish, English and French are spoken in these lands, as well as other dialects and languages such as Creole.

Visitors or tourists, besides being fascinated by picturesque landscape that is enjoyed in this part of the world, may be captivated by some curiosities of this area.

Only 2% of Caribbean islands are populated, and regarding the archipelago of the Bahamas, there is one in which only 50 people live.

Cuba is the largest inhabited island, with 105,806 square kilometers, while the smallest is Canouan, of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with 7.6 square kilometers.

The most populated place is Hispaniola, made up of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with a total of 18,943,000 inhabitants.

The Caribbean receives 30 million visitors annually and 27 million more tourists on cruise ships.

Among its great biodiversity, the Caribbean islands have 172 species of birds that are unique in the world.

Concerning economy, in addition to tourism -as one of the main sources of employment- the banana, coffee and cocoa crops are strong industries.

The Caribbean means color, dance, joy, sea, music and flavors, in harmony with its great cultural and ethnic diversity.
