As stated by Aleksander Makarov, AARI Director, this new system will significantly improve forecasts to guarantee navigation along the Northern Sea Route and the adjacent part of the Arctic Basin.
Covering the entire area with stationary and drifting weather stations will make it possible to get direct hourly observations of ice and weather parameters in the region, Makarov said.
Makarov added that according to the 2024 plan, up-to-date drifting and stationary measuring instruments will be installed in the waters of all Russian Arctic seas, including the routes of the Northern Sea Route.
The stations installed on the buoys will collect information on water and air temperature, atmospheric pressure, heat exchange processes, wind speed. They will allow to access thickness of snow and ice layers as well as track the drift of ice masses.
