India announces candidacy for UN Security Council for 2028-2029

New Delhi, Dec 17 (Prensa Latina) Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar announced his country's candidacy to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 period, local media reported here on Friday.

He said that his country tried to focus on the agenda and the debate at the UN on many topics of contemporary significance such as maritime security, technology in UN peacekeeping, UN reforms, and the fight against terrorism during the current period as a member of this organization.

He added that India tried to become the voice of the global South in many topics of interest when it took on the rotating monthly chair of the United Nations Security Council in December.

It has been the second time that New Delhi assumes this post after taking it on in August 2021, during which it focused on maritime security, UN peacekeeping, and the fight against terrorism.

The law stipulates that the presidency of the UN Security Council must rotate among each one of its 15 members alphabetically.

During India’s presidency of the UN Security Council, two high-level meetings on reformed multilateralism and the fight against terrorism and international peacekeeping and security were held on December 14 and 15.
